Mikumi National Park

Covering an area of 3230 sq km and bordering the Uluguru Mountains to the northeast, the Rubeho Mountains to the northwest and the Lumango Mountains to the southeast – Mikumi hosts a wild number of wild animals.

The fourth-largest national park of Tanzania guarantees wildlife sightings and a perfect safari destination for wildlife lovers.

The beautiful national park is easy to access from Dar-Es Saalam by road, so it’s the best destination for game viewing and day trips.

The Wildlife

Mikumi is often compared to Serengeti for its rich wildlife inhabitants. The most seen wildlife includes elephants, buffaloes, wildebeest, sable, eland, Liechtenstein’s hartebeest, giraffes, elephants, lions, zebras; spotted hyena, jackal, leopards, crocodiles and endangered wild dogs, and the chances are high to find yellow baboons near Kiboga at the southern end of the park.

The chances of seeing tree-climbing lions are more than Lake Manyara National Park.

The Birdlife

With more than 400 bird species, the park is a centerpiece for bird-lovers.

The most popular birds include. African hawk eagle, African grey hornbill, Long-tailed fiscal, African openbill, Cardinal woodpecker, Malachite kingfisher, Mariqua sunbird, Green wood-hoopoe, , Northern carmine bee-eater, Northern pied babbler, Shelley’s sunbird, Southern ground hornbill, Pale batis, Pale-billed hornbill, Red-billed oxpecker, Purple-crested turaco and many more.

November to April offers the best view of the migratory birds.
